Kolkata: Three people, including two teachers, were injured Friday after they were attacked by college students in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district when they were prevented from cheating in an exam, police said.
The under-graduate exam at the centre was cancelled.
The injured pointed fingers at the involvement of members of the Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad (TMCP) – the students’ wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress. The students’ union however denied the charge.
“Three people, of whom two are teachers, have been seriously injured after they were attacked by some students. Apparently the attack happened because the students were prevented from copying,” said an official of Deganga Police Station.
“No complaint has been filed. So we have not arrested anybody,” said Superintendent of Police Champak Bhattacharya.
There was comotion after Basirhat College’s students, who had come to the nearby Chandraketugarh Sahidullah Smriti Mahavidyalaya to appear in their exams, were prevented from cheating. They attacked the teachers and injured them.
Meanwhile, the students of the mahavidyalaya who had gone to the Basirhat College for their exams were allegedly confined within the college premises after the news of the voilent incident in their college.
The exam at both the centres was cancelled following the clash.
Rejecting the claims of the injured, TMCP president Shanku Deb Panda denied the involvement of his organisation’s members and in turn accused the members of another union.
It was a pre-planned attack and linked to enmity between certain members of a Congress-affiliated students’ union and those injured, Panda said.
