The deaths took place in villages of Dhamdaha, Banmankhi, Kasba and Gulabbagh police stations in Purnia.

“Most of them were killed by bolts of lightning,” said an official of the state disaster management department.

Over half a dozen people were injured and are currently hospitalised, he said.

Torrential rains accompanied by strong winds uprooted trees, damaged houses and brought down power cables across the state Monday and Tuesday morning.

Lightning strikes during the June-September monsoon season are common, with villagers housed in bamboo-and-grass huts most at risk.
