The accused – Virender Kumar (47) and Mahender Pal (52) – who swindled more than Rs.20 lakh from gullible engineers, were arrested Monday from a hotel in the capital’s Rajendra Place just eight to ten months after they started their racket.

“The accused persons used to call their victims in some good hotels in the Karol Bagh and New Delhi areas. They lured the victims to arrange a high consultancy commission-based job for them in different projects. But, they would ask the victims to give one percent advance money for their commission,” said Devesh Chandra Srivastva, Additional Commissioner of Police.

On this, the victim used to give one percent of the total amount of the project, said Srivastava.

The officer said that the accused did not have any fixed source of income but were in the habit of leading a lavish lifestyle.

“To lead a lavish life style, they started luring the engineers by assuring them consultancy jobs in private companies and used to take Rs.50,000 to 6,50,000 from each person,” Srivastava added.
