Ranchi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday urged the Jharkhand assembly speaker to constitute an all-party delegation to visit Assam to take stock of the situation there after a protest rally by tribals turned violent last month.

“We have asked Speaker Aalamgir Aalam to constitute a team of all political parties that will visit Assam and take stock of the situation,” said Arjun Munda, former chief minister and BJP leader.

“It is the responsibility of all political parties of the state to safeguard the interest of the tribals. The all-party delegation visit will send a message to Assam and the central government that Jharkhand is concerned about the tribals living there for more than 150 years.

“If the speaker does not constitute a delegation, the opposition parties would do so and meet the violence-affected people in Assam,” said Munda.

Tribals, who shifted from Jharkhand to Assam about 150 years ago, had taken out a rally in Guwahati a fortnight ago, demanding Scheduled Tribe status in that state.

One person was killed and more than 200 people were injured in clashes between the protesters and local people.
