Lucknow : An undertrial shot and critically injured another inside the civil court lock-up at Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday, police said. It is being investigated how the attacker sneaked a gun there.
After a minor altercation, Ram Singh fired at Chandra Prakash with a countrymade pistol inside the lock-up. The bullet hit Chandra Prakash in the chest and he fell on to the ground, bleeding profusely.
The incident took place when the two men, both booked for murder, were brought to the court for a daily hearing and were temporarily put in the lock-up in the court premises.
Ram Singh is in jail for the last three years and Chandra Prakash is in jail for the last one year.
Police took Chandra Prakash to a medical facility where his condition was described as critical, Rae Bareli Superintendent of Police (SP) Prem Narayan told IANS.
Admitting that the matter was “very serious”, the SP said a probe has been immediately ordered. Meanwhile, angered at the incident, lawyers in the court protested what they called was lack of security.
Rae Bareli is the parliamentary constituency of Congress president and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
