Himachal roads, bridges suffer Rs.350 crore damage

Shimla : Roads and bridges in Himachal Pradesh have during the monsoon season suffered damages to the tune of Rs.350 crore, a minister said here Monday.

Public Works Minister Gulab Singh said the loss to the state highways and major roads has been estimated at over Rs.280 crore. Besides, the loss caused to the national highways has been estimated at Rs.56 crore.

“The state government has released Rs.56 crore for carrying out restoration and repair works,” the minister added.

The southwest monsoon, though deficient by 11 percent, withdrew from the state Sep 26.

From June 1 to Sep 26, the hill state got 697.3 mm of rainfall against the normal 785.2 mm, the Met Office here said.

This was the second consecutive year in the state when the rainfall was deficient. Last year, it was eight percent deficient. In 2010, it got 16 percent more than normal.
