New Delhi : A woman lawyer of an accused in last month’s Rs.5.25 crore heist here was arrested for helping her client hide a part of the robbed money, police said Wednesday.
Jyoti Batra, 27, advocate of arrested accused Deepak Sharma, was arrested Tuesday after a raid on her house in west Delhi’s Raghubir Nagar, police said. With this, the number of arrests in the case has gone up to 11.
Based on Sharma’s interrogation, police raided the house of Batra and recovered Rs.70 lakh of the looted money from her house.
“Another Rs.10 lakh were recovered from Pawan Sharma, Batra’s college friend, who was asked to keep the amount in safe custody. Batra told him that she was expecting a raid at her house from the Income Tax department,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma.
With the seizure of Rs.80 lakh following Batra’s arrest, the total money recovered in the case has gone up to Rs.3.40 crore.
The heist took place near a petrol pump in south Delhi’s Defence Colony Sep 28. The accused hijacked a radio taxi carrying Rs.5.25 crore belonging to the ICICI Bank.
Security personnel in the cash van, attached to a security company Premier Shield, had collected the amount from ICICI Bank’s Hauz Khas branch and were heading towards Lajpat Nagar in the van when the incident took place.
The accused, while escaping with the van, shot at guard Munne Singh. He died later in hospital, police said.
