New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission Thursday issued notice to the union ministry of overseas Indian affairs over a complaint by a widow of a worker, who died in Saudi Arabia. His body has not been returned to his family in India even 19 days after his death.
The complaint was filed by Draupdi Devi, widow of Laxminarayan Sharma of Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan.
“We have issued notice to the secretary of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA), on a complaint alleging that even after 19 days, the dead body of an Indian worker, who died in Riyadh, has not been given to his family for the last rites back home,” said an NHRC official.
The secretary has been asked to submit a report in the matter within four weeks.
“He died Sep 14, 2012, and despite several attempts no information or help is being extended to the family to get her husband’s body to perform the last rites,” added the official.
According to the woman, Sharma was working as a driver with a private company based in Riyadh for the past five months.
