Ecuador Picking New Foreign Minister

By Prensa Latina

Quito : Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa presides Friday over a meeting of the ministers’ cabinet, to appoint the country’s new foreign minister, after Maria Fernanda Espinoza resigned from that post.

The Presidence’ media secretary Julia Ortega stated Thursday that there are several candidates with conditions to occupy that important post.

The press chief pointed out that current Tourism Minister Isabel Salvador is included in the list of aspirants, on which Correa has the last word.

After recognizing the labor of the outgoing minister in her 11 months leading that foreign ministry, Ortega said that Espinoza left the post due to personal and health reasons, and she may work in another area.

She stated that “the Foreign Affairs Ministry must be an institute that responds much more to the dynamic of the new government and the citizen revolution.”

Ortega stressed that not only the former minister but also former Government Minister Gustavo Larrea, who also resigned some days ago, could have other responsibilities in the head of State’s administration and political project.

After arriving from an international tour of Asia that took him to Saudi Arabia, China and Indonesia, the president criticized the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s work and spoke out for transforming and deepening the labor of the diplomatic body.
