Kolkata: Former Supreme Court judge Umesh Chandra Banerjee died at a private hospital here Monday following old age complications, family sources said.
Banerjee, 74, who also served as chief justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court for 22 months from Feb 1, 1998, is survived by his son Amitesh.
Banerjee became a Supreme Court Judge Dec 9, 1999 and retired Nov 17, 2002.
After graduating from Scottish Church College in Kolkata, he went to England and became a barrister from Inner Temple, London, in 1964.
He was a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court for about 19 years before before being appointed a judge in 1984.
