Raipur : Chhattisgarh Police Tuesday engaged Maoists in a gunfight and seized a large quantity of ammunition and explosive materials used for making bombs, from a forested hideout in Gariaband district of the state.
Deputy Inspector General of Dhamtari range B.P.S. Pausarya told news persons that on getting the information of presence of Maoists in Gariaband, a joint team of district force and the Central Reserve Police Force was sent on a search operation.
The team confronted Maoists holding a meeting in the forest of Maragaon village, some 125 km from here.
“Seeing the security personnel near them, the rebels started intense firing which continued for half an hour. Security personnel also returned the fire,” Pausarya added.
He said that after an hour-long gun battle the insurgents fled into dense forest taking advantage of rugged terrain. They crossed over into Odisha.
In the post-operation search, police found large quantities of ammunition, explosive materials, wires, fuses, uniforms, items of daily use and Maoist literature from the spot.
