Manipuri Muslim body bans skirts for girls

Imphal : In a bid to contain the rising pace of indecency and obscenity bordering on nudity, which has been spreading its tentacles in the society, a Muslim organisation has called upon Muslim women and girls to take heed of Shari’ah injunctions while stepping out of their homes.

The People’ United Liberation Front (PULF), working in the northeast State of Manipur for social change, has issued a call asking Muslim schoolgirls and college students to give up wearing frocks and skirts.

The PULF said girls should either wear phaneks (traditional wraparound) or salwar-kameez to school and college.

"From the next academic session (2008), they should wear the traditional Manipuri phanek or salwar-kameez, which covers their ankles as prescribed by Islamic law," the
outfit said.

A number of Meetei Pangal (Manipuri Muslim) organisations have extended their support to the PULF demand.
