Chandigarh : The Congress Tuesday demanded immediate action against a Ludhiana-based leader of the Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal who allegedly assaulted a senior police officer at a night club in Ludhiana.
The officer, S.S. Mand, an assistant inspector general (AIG), was admitted to the DMC hospital in Ludhiana, 110 km from here, with serious injuries. Doctors at the hospital said that Mand underwent surgery in the leg due to injuries.
In a statement, Congress leaders said that the attack by a youth Akali Dal leader on Mand has exposed the functioning of the Akali Dal and its youth wing and demanded strict action against the culprits to save the police force from getting demoralised.
The statement issued by Congress legislators Lal Singh, Brahm Mohindra, Parminder Singh, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Navtej Singh Cheema and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, said the “latest case had further reinforced the perception in public mind that nobody was safe in Punjab and the situation rebutted claims made by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in the assembly.”
They claimed that the Akali Dal leader involved in the assault on the police officer had close links with Punjab’s Revenue Minister and Youth Akali Dal president Bikram Singh Majithia.
Police officials said that a case of attempt to murder and under the Arms Act had been registered against three people, including the Akali Dal leader, identified as Sunny.
Police sources said that Mand, who had gone to the night club with friends Monday evening, was involved in an altercation with some people. During this, the night club owner, Sunny, also reached the spot with his accomplices and allegedly assaulted Mand, who is presently with the vigilance wing of Punjab Police.
Another Akali Dal leader had recently shot dead an assistant sub-inspector of the Punjab police near Amritsar as the latter objected to the harassment of his daughter by the leader and his accomplices.
