Rohtak (Haryana) : A teenaged rape victim from Haryana’s Sonipat district, who had set herself on fire Jan 11, has succumbed to her injuries at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) here Thursday, a doctor said.

The victim, who belonged to the Dalit community, was brought here in a critical condition with 90 percent burn injuries from Kharkhoda town in Sonipat.

“The victim had suffered over 90 percent burn injuries and had been undergoing treatment at the super-speciality ward since last Friday. She died this morning,” Sushma Sood, officiating director of PGIMS, told IANS.

She said that the condition of the victim remained critical since after her admission in the PGIMS.

The 16-year-old class 10 student had set herself on fire Jan 11 – five days after she was allegedly raped by a taxi driver who had kidnapped her. She had told her mother but later set herself on fire when her mother had gone out of the house.

Police last Saturday arrested the taxi driver, Rakesh alias Kala on charges of rape.

Family members of the victim rued that no political leader, especially from the government came to sympathize with them or help them even after she was admitted to the PGIMS.

Rohtak, 70 km from Delhi, is the hometown of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the parliamentary seat of his son Deepinder Hooda.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi had flown to the house of another Dalit rape victim, who had died after setting herself on fire, in Haryana’s Jind district in October last year following a spate of rapes in Haryana.

At that time Hooda and his ministers had flocked to the village, Sachhakhera, in full attendance during Gandhi’s visit.
