The fighting between Afghan soldiers with the help of NATO air force, took place in Sangin, Helmand province.

The Defense Ministry said that Talebans left Musa Qala and escaped to Sangin firing in and around Sangin.

Among the 50 Talebans killed were three foreigners and three commanders, the ministry said.

It said no civilians were hurt or killed in the operation.

Talebans overran Musa Qala in February, four months after British troops left the town following a peace agreement that handed over the security to Afghan elders.

Northern Helmand province is the world’s largest opium poppy growing region and has seen the heaviest fighting in Afghanistan this year.
