40 punished over tunnel blast cover-up in China

Beijing : A total of 40 Chinese people have been “punished” for their roles in covering up a fatal tunnel explosion in December in which eight people were killed, Xinhua reported Tuesday.

The explosion occurred in north China’s Shanxi province Dec 25.

The news of the explosion was revealed to the public five days after it occurred when a whistleblower wrote an online post.

Those who received “judicial or disciplinary punishments” included 14 people employed by the Erchu Co. Ltd. under the China Railway Tunnel Group.
