Agartala : A two-day nationwide strike called by major trade unions crippled life in Left-ruled Tripura for a second day Thursday.
“The strike was total and successful,” Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) leader Pijush Nag told reporters here.
Most markets, shops and business establishments, government offices, educational institutions, banks and financial institutions were shut.
Except some two-wheelers, roads were deserted. Rail services between Tripura and the rest of India were affected.
Flights to Kolkata and Guwahati operated normally, an Agartala airport official told IANS.
Buses between Tripura and Bangladesh and other northeastern states were also hit.
The strike has badly hit trade between Tripura and Bangladesh.
Trade unions have made a string of demands including stoppage of disinvestment in central and state public sector undertakings, minimum wages of Rs.10,000 a month, and abolition of contract labour.
