India should take a tough stance against Italy’s ambassador Daniele Mancini as he had promised that the two marines will return to India and face trial, said Vijay, who is also a spokesman for his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He said the Italian ambassador “does not deserve diplomatic immunity and should be arrested if there is need to do so”.

“India must also review level of its diplomatic ties with Italy which has behaved in an unfriendly manner,” Vijay said.

The Supreme Court in February allowed Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, accused of killing two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast, to fly to Italy to vote in the Feb 24-25 national election.

When the Italians were allowed by the Supreme Court to return to Italy for a second time (they went during Christmas and returned), Mancini had promised that the two would return to India and stand trial here.
