52 poor couples tie the knot in mass ceremony in Kolkata

Kolkata : A total of 52 couples from poorer sections of the society in West Bengal were joined in matrimony at a communal wedding ceremony here Sunday.

As many as 45 of the newly-weds hailed from regions like Kumarmari, Rangabelia in the backward areas of the Sunderbans, a mangrove forest area.

Organised by the Vishwa Jagriti Mission Trust, the event saw the brides and grooms tie the knot at the Laxmi Narayan temple in the southern part of the city.

Resplendent in red, gold and beige, the couples were showered with gifts by the trust, including solar fans and solar lights to make them self-sufficient.

Other gifts included cosmetics, toiletries, utensils, furniture etc. to aid them in setting up a proper household.

West Bengal Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee was also present at the occasion.
