She thanked the organisers and audience especially Prof. Arshad Hafeez Khan for delivering the Seventh Nasim Ansari Memorial Lecture.

Prof. Nasim Ansari (1930-2004)

Prof. Arshad Hafeez Khan (Chairman, Department of Plastic Surgery) delivered the Seventh Prof. M. Nasim Ansari Memorial Lecture. The topic was “Plastic Surgery ‒‒ An Overview”. To start with, Prof. A. H. Khan clarified two popular misconceptions about plastic Surgery: (1) plastic material is used for reconstruction in plastic surgery; (2) plastic surgery is scarless surgery. He emphasized that in medical colleges, reconstructive surgery constitutes the major part of plastic surgery, while rhinoplasty is the commonest cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery is done for congenital problems, maxillofacial and hand trauma, acute burns and their sequelae, cancers of the oral cavity and skin cancers. Microsurgical reconstruction constitutes an integral part of Plastic Surgery today. Training of Plastic Surgery Residents includes the acquisition of coordination skill of the “eye-microscope-hand”, which is different from the regular “eye-hand” coordination skill. Eye-microscope-hand coordination skill can be acquired by extensive training under the microscope in the Microsurgery Lab (not in the OT). Therefore, microsurgery laboratory constitutes an integral part of any Plastic Surgery teaching set-up. He requested the chair, Pro Vice-Chancellor Brig. Ahmad Ali, to help in establishing a microsurgery lab at JNMC (AMU, Aligarh). Dr. Khan illustrated his Lecture by a large number of slides, many of which were seen by the audience for the first time. He enumerated also the successful surgery of a large number of patients by the plastic surgeons of his Department.

In his presidential remarks, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Brig Ahmad Ali, praised the Academy profusely and expressed his amazement on the grand achievement by Prof. S. Zillur Rahman singlehandedly. He opined that the work of this Academy should be known not only generally, but also particularly to all AMU students, teachers and researchers. They should take advantage of its vast collection, especially of primary sources concerning history of science. He appreciated also the Academy to organize such functions, thereby contributing to the general awareness of even educated men and women.
