“We demand that the BJP declare its candidate for the prime minister’s post at the earliest and certainly by the year-end as has been the practice,” said the JD-U’s political resolution adopted at its national executive meet.

“Since the 2014 general election is scheduled in March-May, the JD-U suggests that the NDA’s prime ministerial nominee must be declared before the general election,” said the resolution.

According to the resolution, the NDA had contested the 1999 and 2004 general elections under former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the 2009 polls under L.K. Advani. Names of both the leaders were announced for the prime minister’s post well before the polls.

“This indicates the tradition of declaring prime minister candidate before the polls,” said the resolution.

Specifying who could be a candidate for prime minister, the JD-U resolution said he should be committed to the NDA’s national agenda for governance, should have an image of a secularist and should be a votary of inclusive politics and development besides committed to developing backward areas.

The resolution also noted that the people were tired of the Congress-led UPA government and would vote it out in 2014.
