Jammu: At least nine people – seven children and two teachers – were injured when a 5.8-intensity quake rocked Jammu and Kashmir, as also large parts of north India, Wednesday afternoon, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted. There were also reports of buildings being damaged in the Jammu region.

“Seven children and 2 teachers reported injured in 3 different schools. Some damage to structures in the region of Doda, Gandoh & Baderwah,” Abdullah tweeted.

Reports of losses are pouring in. Some of the areas are inaccessible, so it will take some time for the exact details to be known, an official said.

There has been damage to buildings in Doda and Kishtwar districts as they are close to the epicentre of the quake on the Kashmir-Himachal Pradesh border, the official said.

“We have reports of many buildings having developed big cracks while some mud houses in Chatroo, Thathri, Bhaderwah and Gandoh areas have collapsed,” the official said.

The divisional commissioner of Jammu, Pradeep Gupta, said the “administration is monitoring the situation”.
