Hyderabad: The ruling Congress and the main opposition TDP in Andhra Pradesh both have claimed that the YSR Congress party would meet the fate of the BSR Congress and the Karnataka Janata Party (KJP), in the 2014 assembly polls in the state.
Hailing the Congress victory in Karnataka elections, its Andhra Pradesh unit chief Botsa Satyanarayana claimed the people of Karnataka gave their mandate to the Congress for fighting corruption.
Citing the example of the Botsa Sriramulu (BSR) Congress and the Karnataka Janata Party (KJP), Satyanarayana said corrupt parties in Andhra Pradesh would also meet the same fate in next year’s assembly elections.
Revenue Minister Raghuveera Reddy said the YSR Congress’ dream of coming to power in Andhra Pradesh would never be fulfilled.
Celebrations broke out in the Congress camp as it became clear that the Congress would form the next government in Karnataka.
Bursting crackers and distributing sweets, the party workers celebrated the victory. Party workers, including women, were seen dancing at Gandhi Bhavan, the party headquarters here.
The BSR Congress, floated by the followers of former Karnataka minister G. Janardhana Reddy, could win only three seats while the KJP of former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa bagged five seats.
Janardhana Reddy, former BJP leader, is currently lodged in Chanchalguda Jail in Hyderabad in illegal mining case. He was arrested in September 2011.
YSR Congress party president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is also lodged in the same jail for almost a year in disproportionate assets case.
Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader E. Peddi Reddy said that people would teach a lesson to the corrupt parties. “People will teach a lesson to those running party from jail,” he said in an obvious reference to Jaganmohan Reddy.
He drew a parallel between the YSR Congress, the BSR Congress and the KJP, saying the leaders who indulged in corruption while in power formed these parties.
“It is a slap on the face of those who thought they can achieve anything with money,” he said.
The Congress and the TDP have been targeting Jaganmohan Reddy for his alleged close links with Janardhana Reddy, whose brother G. Karunakara Reddy also lost the election in Bellary district of Karnataka.
