Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government Saturday decided to provide heightened security cover to upcoming Vikas Yatra of the ruling BJP and opposition Congress’ Parivartan Yatra.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Raman Singh and attended by top bureaucrats including Chief Secretary Sunil Kumar and comes against the backdrop of a deadly Maoist attack May 25 on Congress leaders’ in state’s Bastar region.
The attack left dead 30 people, mainly the Congress leaders including state Congress chief Nandkumar Patel, former union minister V.C. Shukla and former state minister Mahendra Karma who was credited for launch of the anti-Maoist ‘Salwa Judum’ movement.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have announced to resume their Vikas yatra and Parivartan Yatra respectively in August as the state goes to polls by year-end to elect a new 90-member state assembly.
