All communities should be kept in mind in NRC update: Assam literary body to govt

Guwahati: Welcoming the move of Assam government to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state Char Chapori Sahitya Parishad (CCSP), a literary body has urged upon chief minister Tarun Gogoi to pay heed to the sentiments of all the communities. CCSP also said that if needed the chief minister should sit with the representatives of all the communities to clear the apprehensions in the minds of people regarding NRC.

“It’s a welcome move by the government but we want to mention here that AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) does not represent all the communities of the state. The affidavit which was submitted before the honourable Supreme Court on behalf of the state government and the modalities included in the affidavit were prepared in consultation with AASU only,” said CCSP president Hafiz Ahmed.

Earlier this month, Assam government had announced that it would start all the works of upgrading the NRC simultaneously in the state and would finish within three years of time after meeting with the representatives of ASSU in Guwahati.

“AASU does not represent all the communities in Assam and off late it has been working like an organ of the Sangha-Parivar, torturing the Muslim labourers in the name of Bangladeshi. We were expecting that before submission of the affidavit that Assam government will discuss the modalities with the representative organisations of all the communities so that no organisation can raise any complaint later. The modalities prepared in consultation with Aasu have raised many questions in the minds of the minorities,” Ahmed added.

He also proposed a meeting with the Assam chief minister taking the representatives of all the communities of the state before the NRC update process starts. “I have written to the chief minister regarding this. I hope he will do the needful for a better future of the state,” he said.
