Forty five other Muslim Brotherhood members will spend five years behind bars while eight people – some from the Muslim Brotherhood or Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya, a hardline Islamist group – were acquitted.

The suspects were accused of attacking the armed forces, setting three churches ablaze and burning nine armoured vehicles that cost 20 million Egyptian pounds ($2.86 million), the report said.

They were also charged with targeting government institutions, blocking roads and spreading chaos in the port city of Suez after security forces broke up pro-Morsi sit-ins in the country Aug 14.
