Islamabad : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf declared a three-day official mourning following the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and resolved not to rest till the terrorists were “liquidated”.
“The terrorists are the biggest obstacles to our progress,” he said on national television hours after Bhutto was killed Thursday evening.
“Today, in this hour of grief, I request my people to support me in my resolve to liquidate terrorists from their roots,” Musharraf said in a brief statement, while appealing for peace and calm in the country.
Musharraf convened an emergency meeting of top government officials to review the situation after the assassination, state-run television reported.
Leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Bhutto, 54, was fatally shot by gunmen minutes after a suspected suicide bomber blew himself at her election rally, killing at least 30 people at the Liaquat Bagh park in Rawalpindi.
Bhutto died at the Rawalpindi General Hospital.
