Lucknow : The Lucknow police have found a sweet way to encourage traffic discipline and deal with those who shoot past the traffic signals and speed limits during the New Year’s revelry.
Then city’s traffic police will offer sweets to those who adhere to rules and do not in an inebriated state violate traffic laws. Defaulters will, of course, be penalised.
Lucknow district police chief Akhil Kumar has stocked 10,000 toffees for the New Year’s eve to give to drivers who abide by road safety rules. Cops will be deployed with breath analysers at strategic points.
“In fact, we have started the exercise from today itself so as to inculcate the sense of road discipline among commuters,” Kumar told IANS Saturday.
He said: “There is a permissible limit beyond which the drivers cannot drink while driving; breath analysers will enable us to keep a check on the level of alcohol the drivers drink.”
“The idea behind offering sweets to the law-abiding citizens is to send the message across that the police are here not to pull up irresponsible drivers; it is also meant to appreciate good behaviour,” he said.
Intensive patrolling has been ordered for New Year’s eve in and around popular malls, shopping centres, clubs and hotels, which are likely to draw big crowds. “Special squads in plainclothes would keep vigil against eve-teasing,” the senior police superintendent added.
