Delhi shivers as cold wave returns to northern India

New Delhi : After almost five days of mild weather, cold wave conditions gripped north India Saturday with Srinagar recording a minimum temperature of -4 degrees Celsius and the national capital 3.9 degrees, lowest in the last five years.

In Delhi, residents woke up to a chilly morning with mercury plunging nearly 4 degrees from Friday. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) the capital witnessed a maximum of 20.6 degrees (one degree below normal) and a minimum of 3.9 degrees Celsius (three degrees below normal).

“It’s the lowest minimum temperature of the season so far. It was also the coldest Dec 29 in the last five years,” said an IMD official adding last year the minimum temperature on the same day was five degrees.

While Bhuntar in Himachal Pradesh, recorded a minimum of -1 degree Celsius, it was 1 degree in Amritsar and 4 degrees in Dehradun.

Cold wave conditions have developed over Haryana, north Rajasthan and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Ground frost is also likely at a few places in Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan and northwest Uttar Pradesh.

It will be dry over most of the country, expect for the Nicobar Islands, which may see isolated rain or thundershowers.

The night temperature is expected to drop by 1-2 degrees Celsius in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh as well.
