Agartala : A senior Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader in Tripura was gunned down by the militants, the police said here Monday.
“Armed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants shot dead Chandra Mohan Debbarma when he was having tea at a stall in Kalyanpur in west Tripura,” a police spokesman said.
CPI-M central committee members Baidyanath Majumder, who is also the state party secretary, and Bijon Dhar have reached the town, about 55 km from state capital Agartala.
“To terrorise the people on the eve of forthcoming assembly elections, the separatists have killed the party leader with a political motive,” Dhar told newsmen.
The security forces launched a massive combing operation immediately after the attack to nab the militants.
