New Delhi: Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, who returned Friday night after being indicted by a US grand jury for alleged visa fraud, Saturday met External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh here.
Khobragade arrived in Delhi by a US Airlines flight around 10 p.m. Friday.
The diplomat, who has been transferred to the ministry of external affairs, met Sujatha Singh and Khurshid separately Saturday morning, said sources.
She has asked for a couple of days leave before rejoining duty at the ministry.
Khobragade, who was granted G1 visa with full diplomatic immunity, flew back home after India rejected the US government’s request to waive her immunity. She was asked to leave the US. India, in a reciprocal gesture, asked a US diplomat of similar rank, to leave India.
Khobragade’s handcuffing and strip-search Dec 12 for alleged visa fraud had sparked widespread protests in India. When arrested, she was India’s deputy consul general in New York. She was later transferred to India’s permanent mission at the UN to accord her full diplomatic immunity.
