Cairo : Three Egyptian policemen were killed Wednesday by unidentified gunmen in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia, northeast of Cairo.
The militants shot randomly at a security patrol vehicle that was being used to monitor the security conditions on the road between Suez and Ismailia provinces, Xinhua reported the official news agency MENA.
A lieutenant, a sergeant and a corporal were showered with bullets, said the report, adding that the canal city has been put on high alert.
The ouster of President Mohamed Morsi led by the army last July has triggered waves of attacks on security forces in the restive Sinai peninsula and Suez Canal and Nile delta cities. The state has declared that it is in a war against terrorism.
The army has launched a wide-scale operation to uproot the militants’ strongholds in the peninsula.
