New Delhi : The union cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh decided Thursday to refer to a Group of Ministers (GoM) the Uttar Pradesh government’s request to create a Taj International Aviation Hub in the state.

“The issue came up for discussion but it was decided to refer the matter to the GoM,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi told reporters here.

The proposed air hub is to come up around 70 km from Delhi.

Intense lobbying for and against the proposed international aviation hub has been going for several months now with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati pressing for it.

Others concerned about aviation safety have been counselling against an international airport so close to the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. They have argued this could result in frequent airplane mishaps.

“The GoM will now look at all the aspects,” said Dasmunsi.
