Colombo : At least 20 rebels including their military intelligence leader was killed in confrontations with government security forces in northwest Sri Lanka, a military spokesman said Sunday.
The guerrilla leader, identified only as Charles, was killed in a clash in Mannar, 320 km north of the capital Saturday.
The 20 rebels were killed in three different incidents in the Mannar district, where fighting has escalated during the past week with heavy artillery exchange between the guerrillas and security forces.
The military also recovered more than 200 anti-personnel mines in the same area during a search operation.
