Jaipur : Dismiss it as kite flying if you will, but the Congress in Rajasthan hopes to have people looking up at the sky in the run up to the assembly elections due in November as it uses kites to take on the Vasundhara Raje government.

Hoping to attract voters with newer and more innovative campaign strategies, the chief opposition party in the state has decided to distribute and fly kites carrying messages against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party all over the state.

The innovative idea would be put to test for the first time on Makar Sankranti, which falls on Jan 15 and is also celebrated as a kite-flying day in parts of north India.

“We have decided to use Makar Sankranti to inform people about the anti-farmer policies of the Vasundhara Raje government. Nothing could have been better than distributing kites to kick-start the campaign against anti-people policies of the present dispensation,” said Rajendra Kukswal, a Congress leader in the state.

“We want the masses to unite against the bad policies of the government and throw the ruling party out of power for the well-being of the state and its people,” added former minister and senior Congress leader K.C. Bishnoi.

He said infrastructure development projects initiated during Congress rule had come to a grinding halt under the BJP government.

“The state government is pursuing anti-labour and anti-farmer policies and is indifferent to needs of common man. We will take these messages to people on Makar Sankranti,” said another Congress leader, R.S. Shekhawat.
