New Delhi : The bodies of the two security personnel killed in a suicide militant attack in Afghanistan last week were brought here Wednesday night, even as India thanked Iran for the “prompt assistance” in the evacuation of those injured in the incident.

A suicide bomber had Jan 3 ambushed a convoy of the Border Roads Organisation, engaged in constructing the Zaranj Delaram road, killing two Indians, Manoj Kumar Singh and Desha Singh of the Indo-Tibetan Border Force, and injuring five others.

Manoj Kumar Singh was instantly killed in the bomb attack, while Desha Singh died two days later succumbing to his severe injuries.

The five injured Indian security personnel were also brought back and were being treated in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here. An injured Afghan national who was part of Project Zaranj’s security team was also brought here for medical treatment.

They had earlier been shifted from Zaranj to a hospital in Zobal in Iran.

“The prompt assistance of the government of Iran in facilitating the treatment and evacuation of the Indian and Afghan personnel is deeply appreciated by the government of India,” said external affairs ministry spokesperson Navtej Sarna.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee also wrote to his Iranian counterpart to convey his “personal thanks” for the Iranian assistance.
