New Delhi : India is ruled by people who are “angry” and the Congress is the only party that can take the country forward through love and brotherhood, party vice president Rahul Gandhi said Thursday.
“This is the only country which won its war of independence with love. Today India is ruled by people who are angry,” Gandhi said, addressing the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister.
Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Clean India campaign, Gandhi said: “On one hand they are cleaning the road for photo opportunities and on other hand they are spreading hate.
“Whatever this country has done in the last 60-70 years, the basis of all this is nothing but love and brotherhood. This organisation has been built on that thought.
“Whatever this nation has achieved from Mars Mission to our democracy is due to the vision of Nehru,” he added.
Gandhi said: “Today, there are attempts to divide us and the country.
“Only the Congress can fight these people as it is an organisation (that stands) for love and brotherhood.”
Gandhi admitted that the Congress, voted out in May after a decade in power, had made some mistakes but said it had never swayed from its ideology.
Keen to resurrect Nehru’s legacy, the Congress is organising an international conference Nov 17-18 to mark his 125th birth anniversary.
The party, however, has not invited Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party for the event.
