Brussels: Belgium’s foreign minister has said his country is willing to support the idea of an independent Palestine as part of “a two-sate solution” to the Middle Eastern problems.
Didier Reynders was speaking at a meeting of EU foreign ministers here Wednesday.
“Belgium has long been favourable to the recognition of the Palestinian state,” Xinhua quoted the minister as telling medipersons attending the meeting at the European Council headquarters.
He said the current government has the majority needed to be able to introduce the topic as a debate in parliament. “What we have now is to work in the majority to prepare the debate that must take place in parliament to confirm the matter.”.
In order for an official state recognition of Palestine, it must have a majority in a vote in the Belgian parliament.
