Athens : Greece’s new parliament was sworn in Thursday and gathered for the first time since last month’s election, which brought the left-wing to power.
The meeting, called by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, assessed the resolution of the debt crisis, which is the result of the meetings between the prime minister and European officials during the past few days, reports Xinhua.
On Friday, the 300-member parliament, elected in the Jan 25 national polls, are due to ratify the appointment of radical left Syriza MP Zoi Konstantopoulou as speaker of parliament.
In the weekend, Tsipras is expected to make his government’s policy statement, while the confidence vote on the government will be held Monday evening.
Greek leftist party Syriza won a historic victory in the country’s general elections and formed a ruling coalition with the right-wing Independent Greeks (ANEL) party. It is the first time in Greece’s modern history that a left party is in power after World War II.
