Mumbai: In an unprecedented display of displeasure, a delegation of Awami Vikas Party offered bangles to Muhammad Husain Khan, who heads the Maharashtra Minority Commission for his reluctance in raising minority issues with the ruling BJP-SS government.
The delegation, headed by Liaquat Ali Khan, party’s general secretary, Noorbano Gaus, Mahila state president, Aijaz Mukadam, Mumbai president, Akhtari Aapa, Mumbai vice president, and hundreds of party workers on Tuesday met Husain Khan and requested him to raise the state Muslims’ concerns with regards to reservation, banning of beef and Ismail Yousuf college.

Khan reportedly refused to raise their issues before the government saying it was out of his powers. The group got furious due to his unwillingness in even registering an objection before government on the issues, prompting the women in the delegation to take out their bangles and present those to him.
Humiliated by the delegation, Khan reportedly asked the group for an apology or face police action. The group was adamant and had no feeling of guilt as they approached the authority meant for raising their concerns with the government and were unhappy as he (Khan) was dragging his feet.
Subsequently, chairman Khan reportedly handed over two party men – Liaquat Ali Khan and Mahboob Khan – to Azad Maidan police station.
“We have nothing wrong against him (Husain Khan), we were only requesting him to raise our issues but we are disappointed with his unwillingness. He is not working for the community but in reality is serving the ruling party by keeping mum on these issues,” said Mukadam.
“Why should we apologise to him? He is not carrying out his duties responsibly by not raising minority issues. Can we not even register our displeasure towards him?” he questioned.
No case has been registered till Tuesday night against the duo but they were made to sit in the police station.
Reacting to the said incidence, Shamsher Khan Pathan, president of Awami Vikas Party said, “Minority Commission is established for raising minority concerns with the government. The chairman should not become angry and call police when people approach him with their problems. He should know that being chairman of the commission, he is representing minority communities and not his political party BJP.”
“Muslims in the state are already facing employment issue and due to this beef ban, scores of minority people have been left unemployed or their only business has been drastically affected. Should the Chairman not bring this to the notice of government?” he questioned.
Talking about reservation (reservation to Muslims in education), he said, “Decision about 5 % reservation for Muslims was upheld by the Bombay High Court where as it had scraped 16% reservation to Marathas. But the saffron coalition brought in the ordinance allowing Marathas reservation and completely denied it to Muslims. Is this not injustice? Commission is supposed to raise these issues.”
Annoyed with Hussain Khan’s decision of handing over his party men to police, Pathan said, “If you cannot answer people’s question then you should leave your chair but there is no meaning in threatening them with police. We shall react more energetically if a case is made out against our party men for protesting his silence.”
