Key Bangladeshi militant arrested

Dhaka:A key militant of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was on Monday arrested in the country’s port city of Chittagong.

A police official said Shibly Hossain, a regional JMB commader in Chittagong, was arrested during a raid, Xinhua news agency reported.

A huge amount of explosives and grenade-making material was also seized following Hossain’s arrest, the official added.

In July 2014, the acting militant chief of JMB Anwar Alam Khokon was arrested in Bogra district.

JMB, campaigning for establishment of Islamic rule in Bangladesh, carried out a series of bombings in 63 out of the country’s 64 districts, including the capital city of Dhaka on August 17, 2005 which left two people dead and 150 others injured.

Hundreds of JMB leaders and activists were rounded up while six top leaders of the group, including chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, were hanged in 2007.

Rahman founded the group in 1998.
