Left students’ ‘Gandhigiri’, offer flowers to policemen

Kolkata : In an act of “Gandhigiri” here on Friday, workers of 12 Left students’ unions including the CPI-M affiliated Students Federation of India handed over flowers to the policemen who had allegedly beaten them up during a law violation protest a day ago.

Holding a demonstration in central Kolkata’s Moulali crossing, the student activists – who put up road blockades in various important intersections of the city – offered flowers to the police personnel on duty.

They put up the blockades in points like Hazra Crossing and Jadavpur 8B crossing in South Kolkata, as also Shaymbazar five point intersection in the northern part of the city, and on the bustling Howrah Bridge – the gateway to the city – besides the district towns and other urban and rural areas.

The blockades were organised against the alleged baton charge by the police personnel during the law violation programme held by four leftist students’ unions in the city hub Rani Rashmoni Avenue demanding punishment of policemen purportedly responsible for the death of SFI leader Sudipto Gupta during a protest programme on April 2, 2013.

The leftist student activists also burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Police, however, said there was no breach of peace during Friday’s protest.
