New Delhi : An activist of the Samajwadi Party (SP) set himself ablaze protesting Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s “oppressive polices” against his party in the state Tuesday, the day Mayawati celebrated her birthday.
According to the police, Ranvijay Singh, 22, a resident of Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh and activist of SP student wing, poured kerosene all over his body and set himself blaze. Before anyone could react, the fire engulfed him completely.
Singh was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital with 98 percent burn injuries. His condition was stated to be critical.
“Nearly one hundred activists were holding protests at the Jantar Mantar (in Delhi) against Uttar Pradesh government when Singh all of a sudden emerged from the group and set himself on fire,” a senior police official said.
“We have registered a case of attempt to suicide against Singh,” the official added.
The activists, who were protesting Mayawati’s rule, said they were surprised at Singh’s predetermined move.
“We didn’t know that Sanjay would take such extreme step. All happened in a flash. Everyone is surprised at his step,” said an SP activist.
