Madrid : A meeting between top European Union (EU) and Iranian envoys in Spain ended with little progress in resolving a dispute on Tehran's controversial uranium enrichment programme but the negotiators agreed to resume discussions within two weeks.

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana said the most important outcome of the talks with Ali Larijani, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, late Thursday was an agreement to meet again.

"We are seeking a new impetus for negotiations and we agreed to meet again the week after next," Solana said, adding the talks were held in a "positive atmosphere."

Larijani said there was "common ground" and further talks were needed.

The Islamic Republic has refused to suspend its nuclear programme which Western countries suspect is aimed at making nuclear weapons. Tehran insists it needs nuclear technology for augmentation of power generation.

Iran failed to halt its uranium enrichment activities by May 24, the deadline set by the UN Security Council, and further expanded its controversial programme. Tehran now faces more stringent international sanctions.
