Sleuths of the newly formed Special Operation Squad (SOS), a wing under Crime Branch, nabbed the Sri Lankans – identified as Francis Jansan, 22, T.S. Ranjith, 22, and John Mary Agashtan, 28, all from Jaffna; and Mahalingam Ayyakannu, a Chennai resident – Tuesday from the Empire Hotel in Paharganj area of central Delhi.

“They have been arrested under the provisions of the Foreigners Act, cheating and impersonation. During preliminary investigation we have not found their connection with the LTTE,” Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.

The police said they were arrested after noticing their suspicious movements around the hotel.

“After searching their rooms, we recovered forged Indian passports and visas. The foreigners in their interrogation revealed that they had no links with LTTE. They came to India, as they were upset with the ongoing strife in their country,” Bhagat said.

“The Sri Lankans also said that they had paid Rs.75,000 to a Chennai-based man for procuring fake documents. We have sent a team to arrest the people who prepared fake documents,” he added.
