Guwahati: Manipur remained tensed following the killing of a Madrassa headmaster in ‘Dadri-style’ incident on Monday, suspecting him for stealing a cow.

The protestors have demanded proper inquiry into the matter and called for a state-wide strike on Thursday.

Md Hasmat Ali alias Babu, 55, was lynched to death by a mob suspecting him of stealing a cow near Keirao Makting village in Manipur’s Imphal East district early Monday morning.

A joint action committee (JAC) formed to demand justice for the killing has expressed its displeasure over the police action.

The JAC has denied the charges of cow stealing and demanded for a proper inquiry over the incident.

The house of one of the brothers of Hasmat Ali was burnt down by protestors on Tuesday following allegations that he was involved in the killing.

Sources, however, said Ali’s brother has some conflict with him over a plot of land. “His brother wants to give colour to the incident as stealing of cow. There should not be a communal tension over the issue,” said the source based in Ali’s village.

A local police officer said that the situation is now under control after assurance was given to book the culprits at the earliest.

Imphal Free Press newspaper reported that Md Rajaoddin, JAC convenor, submitted the submitted the resolutions in the form of a memorandum to the deputy Chief Minister who is also the Home minister this morning, the SP Imphal East and OC Irilbung.

The JAC also took out a public rally till Irilbung PS to submit the memorandum.

In its memorandum, the JAC has claimed that all allegations made on the deceased Md Hashmad are totally baseless and unfounded and that he was a professional teacher, and that the allegation of Ali stealing a calf is really unfortunate, he said.

The memorandum said although the owner of the calf has pointed three persons allegedly involved in the incident, the Irilbung Police is unable to make any arrest which the JAC takes seriously, he said.

The JAC has also warned to take further action jointly with organisations of Uchekon, Kongba, Keirao localities if the government fails to take proper action.
