Members of the Sir Syed Foundation met Irani and submitted a letter from the the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt Gen (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah asking for more funds for the Central University. Shah cited that given the size of the University, the funds allocated for the same and its other centres must be increased. “…AMU has been released for lesser funds than BHU which is of equal size. In fact, Jamia Millia Islamia, which is a quarter in size of AMU, has been given a far larger allocation,” the letter said. He also cited an earlier letter written to the Minister regarding the critical financial situation of the University’s three centres in Mallapuram, Murshidabad and Kishanganj and said that the matter had not been resolved. Shah also sought an appointment with Irani to explain the criticality of funds.

The delegation also requested Irani to approve the construction of a 150-room hostel, which would be named after Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh, an alumnus of the AMU who had also donated a sizeable amount of land to the University. Kunwar Bhartendra Singh, Member of Parliament from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, also wrote to the Minister in support of the claim for a hostel.
