Kolkata : The BJP on Sunday moved the Election Commission seeking the removal of an “influential” IPS officer with “strong links” with West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress to ensure that the assembly polls were free and fair.
Referring to a sting operation in which the Indian Police Service officer along with many top-notch Trinamool leaders have been purportedly caught taking bribes, a Bharatiya Janata Party delegation, led by national secretary Sidharth Nath Singh, met West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta.
“The sting operation among others, has brought to fore in detail, the role of the IPS officer. He has a very strong links with the Trinamool government.
“The sting shows how in the previous elections (the 2014 Lok Sabha polls), this officer was in a position of influence, and even hoodwinked the EC,” he said.
“So we approached the EC demanding that this officer be removed from duty, during the process of elections to ensure that he cannot influence the polls,” the BJP leader added.
