Kolkata law college students peeved at white/black dress code

Kolkata : Students at the Hazra Law College here have expressed displeasure over the University of Calcutta’s notification directing them to adhere to a white/black/grey full-sleeved formal dress code from June 28 in accordance with the Bar Council of India’s recommendations.

The law college is affiliated to the varsity.

“We want to request the authorities to reconsider the decision because it’s not convenient for students who usually come from far-off places. Also, given the soaring temperatures and five days a week schedule, a black and white code is not practicable. Let them first install air-conditioning systems in classrooms,” a student of the college said here on Wednesday.

In a circular dated May 30, the varsity’s law department has issued guidelines in “accordance with the recommendations of the Legal Education Committee of the Council regarding uniform dress code especially for professional education”.

Male students have been asked to wear full sleeve shirt with trousers in the indicated colour code while woman students have been prescribed the same in addition to alternatives of white full sleeve kameez with a Patiala (kurta with Patiala trousers) and white saree with full sleeve blouse.

The students will discuss their grievances with college authorities on Friday.
