Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Aliah University and Social Network for Assisstance to People (SNAP) are together organizing a National Seminar on ‘Media and Marginality: Situating The Minority In Popular Narratives’ on April 30, 2017 at the Auditorium of Park Circus campus of the university. The seminar scheduled on Sunday is to start from 10:00 AM.
In a power-packed one-day deliberation, panelists will share their views on socio-economic conditions of minorities, political debates regarding Muslim rights seen through the conflicting prism of personal laws and uniform civil code, coverage of minority issues in mainstream media and issues of stereotyping.
One session will specially focus on the dual marginality of Muslims women within the larger marginalized community. Speakers from Bangladesh are also expected to share their views on the representation of minorities in media in the neighbouring country.
Eminent speakers of the event include Advocate Flavia Agnes, Director of Majlis Manch; A. Faziur Rahman, Founder Secretary General, Islamic Forum for the Promotion of Moderate Thought; Suvojit Bagchi, Bureau Chief of The Hindu; Marya Shakil, Deputy Political Editor and Anchor of CNN-News 18, Ajitha Menon, Political Economy Advisor, British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata; Syeda Saadia Azim, Public Affairs Specialist at the US Consulate, Kolakta, among others.
Over 20 research scholars and academicians from various universities in West Bengal and across the country will also present their papers covering different aspects of the broader theme of media and minorities.
M Reyaz, assistant professor at Aliah University, who is also the co-convener of the seminar, told TwoCircles.net, “Through this one day deliberation, we hope to open a debate in Kolkata on looking at issues related to minority academically, and in more serious and nuanced way.”
He added, “We are a young university but we hope to play pivotal role in coming decade and emerge as a centre of excellence at par with AMU and Jamia. We aim to organise a series of programmes around the broader theme of minority empowerment in coming years to give intellectual and academic base to the minority question in the region.”
